Imagine smiling in a photo without thinking twice about it. For the right patient, porcelain veneers can create a natural-looking smile designed around their features, preferences and goals.
At Beachwood Dental, Dr. Paul Mikhli takes a personalized approach to cosmetic dentistry. The porcelain veneer process is gentler, more collaborative and more predictable than many patients imagine. Here’s exactly how it works, including a recent case of ten upper porcelain veneers designed entirely around one patient’s goals.
Are porcelain veneers right for me?
Not always, and any honest dentist will tell you that first. Sometimes professional teeth whitening alone gets you where you want to go. Sometimes orthodontics is the better path, or cosmetic bonding.
So we start with a conversation, not a drill. What bothers you when you look in the mirror? What would you like to change about your smile?
Beauty genuinely is in the eye of the beholder. Some patients want squarer teeth with sharper, more striking angles; others want something softer, rounder and more feminine. There is no single perfect smile, only the one that’s right for your face.
How will I know what my new smile will look like before it’s permanent?
You’ll see it, and wear it, first.
We take photos, digital scans and molds, and our lab builds a wax-up: a full, sculpted preview of your new smile on a model of your teeth. That comes back with a putty matrix, which we fill with tooth-colored acrylic and place directly over your teeth. Within minutes, you’re looking at your proposed smile in your own mouth.
Too long? Too wide? Too square? We can make adjustments.
You wouldn’t build a house without walking through the plans with your architect first, and your smile deserves the same respect. You are a co-designer here, not a spectator.
How much of my natural tooth is removed for porcelain veneers?
Far less than most people fear. Depending on the individual case, we may remove roughly 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters of enamel, about the thickness of a contact lens.
Minimally invasive preparation isn’t just about comfort. Keeping the reduction as conservative as possible helps preserve the natural tooth structure underneath. This is where careful planning, precision and experience matter.
How long does it take to get porcelain veneers?
Typically, the porcelain veneer process takes about four visits over approximately five weeks.
It begins with a design consultation and record taking, followed by the smile preview appointment. Next is a longer preparation appointment, when we shape the teeth, take final records and place temporary veneers built from your approved wax-up.
You’ll wear the temporary veneers for about two to three weeks while the dental lab handcrafts your final porcelain veneers. Then it’s time for the final appointment.
What happens when my final porcelain veneers are placed?
We try your porcelain veneers in with a temporary paste before anything is permanent. We look at them together, in good light and from every angle.
Only when you love them and we agree they’re right, do we bond them in place.
How do I care for porcelain veneers, and how long do they last?
Once bonded, porcelain veneers are strong and designed for everyday life. But there is one important rule: don’t use your teeth as tools.
If there’s a tool for the job — a nutcracker, bottle opener or scissors for opening a bag — use it. We also recommend wearing a night guard while you sleep when appropriate, particularly if you grind or clench your teeth, to help protect your veneers.
With excellent oral hygiene, regular dental care and good habits, porcelain veneers can last many years, and some patients enjoy them for 20 years or longer. Longevity varies based on the individual patient and how the veneers are cared for.
Great cosmetic dentistry comes down to planning, precision and partnership between you, your dentist and the dental lab.
